What is a recurring deposit (RD)?

A recurring deposit lets you invest a fixed amount every month with a bank or post office for a set period, earning a fixed interest rate. It's a safe, disciplined way to save for a short-to-medium-term goal.

Interest is usually compounded quarterly. This calculator uses the standard monthly-compounding estimate, which is very close, so treat the maturity figure as a close estimate.

RD vs SIP

An RD gives a fixed, guaranteed return with no market risk — good for safety and short goals. A SIP in mutual funds can give higher returns over the long term but carries market risk. Use an RD for safety, a SIP for growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the RD maturity amount guaranteed?
Yes — RD returns are fixed at the rate agreed when you open it, so the maturity amount is known in advance (unlike market investments).
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes, RD interest is added to your income and taxed as per your slab. Banks may deduct TDS if interest crosses the threshold in a year.
Is this calculator exact?
It's a very close estimate. Banks compound quarterly and round differently, so your actual maturity may vary by a small amount.
