How the NPS works

The National Pension System (NPS) is a government-regulated retirement scheme. You contribute regularly during your working years; the money is invested in a mix of equity and debt and compounds until age 60. At retirement, you can withdraw up to 60% of the corpus as a tax-free lumpsum, and at least 40% must be used to buy an annuity — a product that pays you a monthly pension for life.

This calculator estimates the corpus from your monthly contributions, splits it into lumpsum and annuity by your chosen percentage, and estimates the monthly pension as: annuity amount × annuity rate ÷ 12.

Why NPS is popular

Very low fund-management charges, extra tax deduction of ₹50,000 under Section 80CCD(1B) over and above 80C, and disciplined long-term compounding. The trade-off is the lock-in till 60 and the mandatory annuity portion.
