How HRA exemption works

If you live in rented accommodation and receive House Rent Allowance as part of your salary, a portion of it can be tax-free — but only under the old tax regime. The exempt amount is the LOWEST of these three:

  1. Actual HRA received from your employer
  2. Rent paid minus 10% of salary (Basic + DA)
  3. 50% of salary in a metro (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai) or 40% elsewhere

Whatever HRA remains above the exempt portion is added to your taxable income.

Documents you need

Rent receipts (and the landlord's PAN if yearly rent exceeds ₹1 lakh). If you pay rent to your parents, it's legal — but they must actually receive the money and show it in their income.

Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?
Yes, if the arrangement is genuine: pay by bank transfer, keep rent receipts, and your parents must declare the rent as income.
