How GST is calculated

Add GST (price is exclusive of tax): GST = Amount × Rate ÷ 100, and Total = Amount + GST.
Remove GST (price already includes tax): Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100), and GST = Total − Base.

For intra-state sales, the GST is split equally into CGST and SGST (half each). For inter-state sales it becomes a single IGST of the same total rate.

Common GST rates in India

Most goods and services fall under 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%. Essentials may be 0% (exempt), while luxury and sin goods sit at 28% (sometimes plus cess). Always confirm the correct HSN/SAC rate for your product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between CGST and SGST?
For sales within the same state, GST is split equally — half goes to the Centre (CGST) and half to the State (SGST). Together they equal the full GST rate.
How do I remove GST from a total price?
Divide the total by (1 + rate/100). For example, ₹1,180 at 18% gives a base of ₹1,000 and ₹180 GST. Use the "Remove GST" mode above.
